We Contain Multitudes
Yes. I've been thinking about the whole, "I don't know if I want to be her or be with her" dilemma that so many queers face. But is it really a dilemma? Can't you have both at the same time? Can't you steal her clothing and love and admire her at the same time? I feel like somewhere down the road, queers were tricked into believing that we have to make a binary choice about who we desire. I'm just babbling at you right now, feel free to babble back (or not!). But I do like your Whitman ref! xo

I agree that we are tricked into thinking that way. But we also trick ourselves, I think. Most of the butch blogs and tumblrs I follow subscribe to that binary thinking. Which is funny, because in real life people don’t follow those rigid rules (butch/femme, top/bottom) as much as people seem to think on the internet. But it still gives me anxiety about how I appear and how that transmits who I desire. And thanks- the Whitman quote is my fav- I even have it tattooed!

Right now my bedroom furniture consists of a mattress on the floor and an old dresser, once I get the funds I am so doing this to my room.

It’s a New Year and with it comes a fresh opportunity to shape our world.

So this is my wish, a wish for me as much as it is a wish for you: in the world to come, let us be brave – let us walk into the dark without fear, and step into the unknown with smiles on our faces, even if we’re…

Neil Gaiman says everything.

Yep

School is really important: Reading, writing, arithmetic. But what they tend to do is teach you reading, writing, arithmetic…then teach you reading, writing, arithmetic again. Then again, then again, just making it harder and harder just to keep you busy. And that’s where I think they messed up. There should be a class on drugs. There should be a class on sex education. No, REAL sex education class, not just pictures and illogical terms…There should be a class on scams, there should be a class on religious cults, there should be a class on police brutality, there should be a class on apartheid, there should be a class on racism in America, there should be a class on why people are hungry, but there’s not, their class is on…gym….Their class is like Algebra. we have yet to go a store and said, “Can I have X Y + 2 and give me my Y change back, thank you.” You know?…Like foreign languages. I think that they are important, but I don’t think it should be required. Actually, they should be teaching you English, and then teach you how to understand double talk, politician’s double talk. Not teaching you how to understand French and Spanish and GERMAN. When am I going to Germany? I can’t afford to pay my rent in America! How am I going to Germany?

jane-alright:

So I’ve been planning since summer to come out to my parents over thanksgiving break (it gives them a month-long grace period, and then home for the holidays). I figure that I won’t be able to explain it all too well, so I made em a booklet.

I shared this with a few friends before break, and they requested I upload it, so here it is! I’m gonna go a little crazy in the tags too, in the hopes that someone who really needs it might see it. peace.

This is the best, print a million copies

Men’s average ideal weight is up 14 pounds since Gallup first measured it in 1990 and their average actual weight is up 16 pounds. Women’s average ideal weight is up 11 pounds since 1990, and their average actual weight is up 14 pounds. These trends suggest that as Americans have grown heavier overall, their concept of what their ideal weight is has been adjusted upward as well. These results are based on Gallup’s annual Health and Healthcare survey, conducted Nov. 15-18. Gallup has asked Americans how much they weigh yearly since 2001, as well as in 1990 and 1999.

Americans Continue to Adjust Their Ideal Weight Upward (Gallup)

An average gain of 14 lbs among women and 16 lbs among men, since 1990. 14 lbs. 14 FUCKING LBS. THIS is the fucking obesity epidemic? THIS what I’m getting oppressed over?

A weight gain that can likely nearly be entirely accounted for by an aging population and smoking cessation?

THIS YOUR OBESITY EPIDEMIC. You fucking liars. You fucking panic-mongers. You fucking small-minded shitwads who desperately needed someone to feel automatically better than, through no actual effort on your part, by virtue of no actual ADDED VIRTUE on your part.

Fuck you fucking healthists who’ve been pushing this fat panic bullshit ever since the lowering of BMI thresholds. Fuck you in the government for getting rich off panic-mongering and appropriating funds for giant new bureaucracies whose stated goal is to experiment on an entire generation of children. Fuck you employers for your ‘employee wellness programs’ that cause financial hardship to fat people who are penalized for having the wrong BMI. Fuck you insurance companies for profiting off the panic by charging fat people more for their policies. Fuck you stupid fucking economists who do assumption-laced back-of-the-envelope calculations that suggest fat people are responsible for global warming. Fuck you private and public foundations for issuing giant grants to anyone who does a study that finds in the negative for ‘the obese,’ and fuck you researchers who take that money.

The ‘obesity epidemic’ isn’t real, folks. It isn’t real. It isn’t fucking real. Welcome to the Theatre of Panic, Hate, and Other Shameful Social Tendencies. They say life is a stage. Well, I want fucking OFF of this one.

Food for thought. I wonder about statistics for children, though. Working in the child care industry I hear all the time about the “child obesity epidemic”. And I see it, honestly. Kids weigh more, eat less healthy and exercise less than they used to. I’d like to see statistics of average children’s weights now compared to 1990.
